The Holy Fire in Jerusalem

The Holy Fire (Greek, agios phos, literally "Holy Light") is a miracle that occurs every year at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem on Holy Saturday, the day preceding Pascha. It is considered by many to be the longest-attested annual miracle in the Christian world, though the event has only been documented consecutively since 1106. In many Orthodox countries around the world the event is televised live.

Orthodox people often find themselves echoing Philip’s plea to Nathaniel: “Come and see!” In the season of Holy Week and Easter, Orthodox churches everywhere play host to folks who are checking out these services for the first time. The city of Victoria is no exception, and of course the doors of our Orthodox churches are always open to all, and not just at this time of year. But your first experience of any Orthodox service can be pretty overwhelming – this is, after all, the eastern Church– and the Holy Week and Easter services are overwhelming even by Orthodox standards! Here are just a few things to help you as you attend your first Orthodox ‘Easter’ service.

Icon Workshop Announcement

The workshop lasts seven full intensive days and includes several lectures on the theology and history of the icon. The student will complete one icon (board preparation, gesso, egg-tempera paint, gilding) in the course of the class. The workshop is limited to 15 students.
